Major Duties (Job Description)

  • Demonstrate a broad knowledge of field artillery operations and fire support to write, edit and review and publish a variety of US Army Field Artillery manuals
  • Perform independent as well as coordinated studies involving all aspects of Field Artillery
  • Provide technical and customer support currently for all US Army active and reserve component field artillery organizations and influences
  • Participate in Army-wide activities and projects.
  • Review doctrine, tactics, techniques and procedures publications to include North Atlantic Treaty Organization and joint publications, multiservice tactics, techniques, and procedures
  • Reviews all doctrinal and technical documents produced to correct grammatical and typographical errors, misspelled words, improve structure and enhance clarity of presentation. Verifies facts to resolve possible factual or technical errors.
  • Advise the official representative or may represent USAFAS at conferences or working groups, decision meetings on fire support.

Individual Occupational Requirements Education Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Must have included a total of 15 semester hours in an appropriate scientific, technical, or social science field(s), and at least one course above the introductory level in the field(s) covered by the position. For technical manuals and specifications writers or editors, the equivalent of 15 semester hours may have been gained through vocational or educational training above the high school level at a public, private, or Armed Forces school. OR Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes providing explanations, advice, or counsel regarding format requirements for publishing documentation and proper presentation of data for field artillery operations; ensuring written reports and manuals on field artillery operations consist of purpose, background, system description, tactics, techniques, and procedures; utilizing applicable computer systems, software, and applications necessary to ensure accurate and compliant information is used in the development of field artillery publications. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). OR ??????? Education: Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree that included a total of 15 semester hours in Technical and Professional Communication, English, Communication Studies, and at least one course above the introductory level in Technical Writing. For technical manuals and specifications writers or editors, the equivalent of 15 semester hours may have been gained through vocational or educational training above the high school level at a public, private, or Armed Forces school. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.
